BS 7750:1994

BS 7750 (the Specification for Environmental Management Systems) was published in 1992 and reviewed to latest version in 1994. BS 7750:1994 is a British Standard that specifies requirements for the development, implementation and maintenance of environment management systems, aimed at ensuring compliance with stated environmental policy and objectives (BSI, 2009).

The BS 7750:1994 is considered as the predecessor to the ISO 14000 Environmental Management Series and the requirements specified in the standard’s elements are very similar to ISO 14001. It provides a structure to develop the environmental management system for an organisation; evaluates its performance; defines policy, practices, objectives and targets; offers a mechanism for assessment and finally provides a catalyst for continuous improvement. The standards emphasise on the environmental policy and the management commitment to upholding the policies throughout the organisation’s practices. Slight difference of this standard from the ISO 14001 is that the preparatory review and definition of the organization's environmental effects is not part of the BS7750 requirements.

The BS 7750:1994 has now been superseded by the BS EN ISO 14001:1996 and then by BS EN ISO 14001:2004
