EuP

The Energy-using Product (EuP) Directive was released by the EC on 6 July 2005 and transposed into UK law under Statutory Instrument on 11 August 2007. This directive establishs a framework for setting of the eco-design requirements for energy-using products. The objective is to reduce the environmental impact of energy-using product throughout its life-cycle, by systematically integrating environmental aspects in the product design.

The scope of the Directive covers all energy using products, except transport. However, requirements relating to individual products, need to be established by an EU wide Implementing Measures through progressive preparatory studies.

In UK, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is leading the implementation of measures resulting from the initial studies which focus on energy efficiency gains, into the UK Law. Products which complied with the implementing measures will be awarded with Eco-label. This directive benefits both businesses and consumers, as besides enhancing product quality and environmental protection, it also facilitates free movement of complied products across the EU.

The European Commission (through DG TREN programme) had sanctioned studies for 28 product groups, i.e.:-
