Current manufacturing strategies are based on optimisation of cost and production outputs. This has led to a decision making process that does not take into account the environmental impacts of production activities.
SMART researchers are focussing on improving the development of future manufacturing strategies in which decisions are based not only on cost and operational requirements, but also on environmental and impacts. To meet these challenges there are two clear focusses in our research, firstly to extend the scope of current information models to include relevant environmental data, and secondly to utilise the latest intelligent sensoring devices to improve planning and control of manufacturing processes.
