Background

Eileen graduated from the University of St Andrews in 2005 with a MChem in Chemistry. The fourth year of her degree was spent on placement in industry at Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems (RRFCS) Limited where she worked in the R&D team developing one of the functional materials used in the fuel cell. After graduating, Eileen joined the SMART Centre in January 2006 to work on a Knowledge Transfer Collaboration project with RRFCS. The aim of this three-year project was to develop and implement a decision support system and strategy to optimise the sustainable design, manufacture and end-of-life management of fuel cell systems for stationary power generation applications. Following completion of the fuel cells project, Eileen was keen to apply the skills and knowledge she had gained to a new research area, and returned to the SMART Centre in September 2009 to work on a project investigating the use of bio-derived polymer materials in packaging. This project will use life cycle assessment to compare bio-derived polymers with their fossil-derived equivalents and, in particular, explore issues surrounding the end-of-life management of these new materials.
